Capital City Scribes, Austin’s calligraphy guild

Capital City Scribes logoI was chatting with Charlee Knight at the Cypress, campus, and she mentioned that she was a member of Capital City Scribes, Austin’s very own calligraphy guild. I had no idea — but I’m not passing up this opportunity. Here’s what she says about CSS and their upcoming exhibit in Georgetown.

Over a year ago Capital City Scribes (CCS) embraced the opportunity to coordinate an art exhibit in coalition with Treewhispers International, and we are very excited to see it through fruition.

Treewhispers is a world-wide movement that promotes and encourages each of us as human beings to recognize our identification and connection to trees and encourages us to reflect on how our lives are influenced by the relationships we establish with nature.  Believing that trees have a profound impact on our lives, this organization offers artists a unique platform to express this ideology by displaying their relationship with trees and nature on “paper” rounds measuring 8”-12” in diameter as their canvas.  Some of the rounds created will be framed and displayed, and some will be assembled together in large tubular columns representing trunks of trees.
This exhibit can be experienced at the Georgetown Library with a public reception on February 9th and will be on display through March 2, 2018.  Upon entering the library, guests will have the opportunity to walk through the Hall Gallery where you will view the artists framed pieces of artwork.   From there you will make your way into the Bridge Gallery.  There you will find, suspended from the ceiling, 15-foot long columns stacked on top of one another.  It is the desire of this part of the exhibit to create the sensation that you are walking among cops of trees.  As an onlooker, you will sense a level of the intimacy offered to you through viewing what the artist captured on the rounds and it will guide you in recognizing the uniqueness of each framed and suspended canvas as a “gift” to you from the artist.  It is my personal opinion that this exhibit is holy ground.  There is no better way to describe it than through that statement, because it is a personal contribution of the mind and heart of the artist.  Each round stands as a private invitation to absorb the artist’s personal experience with nature.

I am excited to be a part of this year long endeavor and I would like to extend an invitation for all to come and “walk amongst the trees.”

I joined the Capital City Scribes (CCS) of Austin in November 2016.  CCS is a calligraphy guild, established in 1983, now with  over 130 members .   Interested in exploring beautiful calligraphy?  Visit our website.  www.ccscribes.com.

The Treewhispers Artists’ Reception and exhibit are listed on the Georgetown Library’s calendar of events. Please visit Georgetown Library website for more complete information regarding business hours.

Thanks to Carol (Charlee) Knight for the guest post!
