News from ACC’s Peace and Conflict Studies program
Peace and Conflict Studies is hosting its Spring Symposium this Friday. The Spring Symposium, now in its seventh year, was originally developed and conceived by students within the Peace and Conflict Studies program as a way to engage the wider community on the issues of peace and conflict transformation that are central to the discipline. Over the years, the Spring Symposium as has explored themes related to peace, conflict, and social justice and has featured numerous communities, groups, and disciplines both at ACC and in the surrounding community.
This year’s symposium is being held in conjunction withCreative Writing, Dance, Drama, and Interdisciplinary Studies, and with the office of International Programs.
The Arts as a Catalyst: Creating A Culture of Peace
This year, our theme is how the arts contribute to a culture of peace. By its very nature, art engages with forms of conflict and its possible resolutions: in its subject matter, the juxtaposition of color and line in visual art, the tension and release in a musical composition, or the underlying structure of drama, dance, literature, and film.
Art creates its own publics and counter-publics, engenders assent, dissent, and perhaps the most important intermediary between peace and conflict: dialogue.
This year will also include a panel that explores how art can model alternate world-making and the crucial role it plays in our own day-to-day world making, beyond the gallery and the museum.
